Have you ever felt that awful feeling in the pit of your stomach when you realize one of your favorite artists passed through town and you missed it, or even worse, are in town tonight and tickets are sold out? With the Bandinstown app for Android, you never have to feel that way again!
Similar to rival app Songkick Concerts, Bandsintown gives you a personalized concert calendar based on your music library and accounts from a number of different sources. \n
After registering with Bandsintown using either your Facebook or email account, you get personalized concert recommendations based on your favorite artists and chosen location. You can integrate your Bandinstown app with your Facebook likes, Twitter, last.fm, Pandora, Rdio, Spotify and Google Play accounts to track artists. You can also share concerts or invite friends on Facebook via the app. RSVP'ing to an event as either 'I'm going' or 'Maybe' will put all the events in your calendar and lets you compare with your friends to see if you're interested in the same gigs.
Bandsintown gives you recommendations for artists based on what you already listen to. You can see local shows of your tracked artists or all local shows in your area, a great way to discover new music. You can choose more than one location to track concerts, as well as choosing the maximum distance from your city that you'd be willing to travel for a concert. The app can send you push notifications or emails when artists you track are playing near you.
When you tap on an artist, you have the option to listen to their music instantly, but only if you have a premium Spotify account. Tapping an artist will also give you a list of similar artists. Aside from your tracked artists, you can also check out popular artists.
Another cool feature is the option to 'Play My City', where you can campaign to have an artist play in your location through Facebook.
Getting into the groove
The Bandsintown homescreen gives you a list of artists you track and lets you choose how many recommended artists you'd like to see with a 'concert cloud'. Your tracked artists are bolder than your recommended artists, making it easy to differentiate between the two. You can easily stop tracking an artist by tapping on their name and unticking the 'Tracking' option, but each artist must be removed individually which could prove arduous if you have a lot of unwanted artists spread across various integrated music platforms.
The navigation bar at the bottom of the screen makes switching between your concert cloud, gigs, artists and RSVPs very straightforward. Switching between different locations was a bit unclear at first but can be done through the location pin on the homescreen or through the app's settings. Bandsintown only allows a maximum of three saved locations, and will replace locations if you search for new ones.
Bandsintown has a great interface, functions well and has accurate artist and concert data, as well as good artist recommendations based on taste.
Email notifications for upcoming gigs are sometimes delayed to the day before an event, which can be frustrating for bigger artists who are likely to have sold out shows. This can be avoided, however, by opting to receive push notifications of artists announcing tour dates.
Bandsintown is the perfect app for concert lovers and music explorers alike, ensuring you will never have to miss a great gig in your city again! A simple concept beautifully executed.
